The Old Course winds its distinctive hook-shaped path from the town to the Eden Estuary, wrapping around a nub of the New Course (1895), mostly on the left. The Jubilee Course (1897) is beyond on the far side. The Eden Course (1914) is on the right.
Undergraduates walk along St Andrews pier in red gowns. The pier walk on Sundays is a university tradition. After the service at St Salvator’s Chapel, and at other times, students proceed to the end of the pier and back. It is not obligatory to own a red gown but it offers the opportunity to get immersed in the culture of the university.
After the pier walk at the start of the Martinmas semester, the biggest walk of the year, undergraduates in traditional red gowns make their way back to town past the cathedral ruins. Gowns are knee-length, made from pure wool with a velvetine collar.
